A collection of groundbreaking research by a leading figure in neuroscience.

This book compiles, for the first time, Stephen W. Porges’s decades of research. A leading expert in developmental psychophysiology and developmental behavioral neuroscience, Porges is the mind behind the groundbreaking Polyvagal Theory, which has startling implications for the treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma, and autism. Adopted by clinicians around the world, the Polyvagal Theory has provided exciting new insights into the way our autonomic nervous system unconsciously mediates social engagement, trust, and intimacy.

Has there been any book till now on this fascinating subject? I guess no; this book is unique and sheds a light on so many disorders and behavioral adaptations that can't be traditionally healed or rectified. It concerns us all.
    "Psychophysiology"
This is a well constructed scientific presentation, very rigorous, rather for professionals or students (osteopaths, physical therapies, rolfing, caregivers..) but understandable for laypeople that are a bit educated in biology and very curious.

As a social work student, this resource has been amazing. My main research interests include grief, trauma, and attachment; this book has been a reliable and impressive reference in which to turn. I have used it for many papers and I have also used examples from it in class discussions. I think it should be required reading for any student hoping to enter the social services field.

As a non-medical professional, the anatomical and neurological terminology slowed my reading rate, but I persisted and found the author's theories to be interesting. There is enough repetition of the theory in various contexts to make it clear to even the casual reader. He postulates his well researched and fully annotated ideas but leaves the application of these ideas to the medical and psychiatric professionals. There is little in the way of help for the lay person.

Astonishing, if true. I'm not a doctor or biologist, but this work seems well referenced. It could go a long way to explaining important previously not well under phenomena. While it seems to be directed to doctors, I found it fairly accessible to anyone with an interest in this area.

Dr. Stephen Porges presents his revolutionary theory on the phylogenetic model of the mammalian nervous system, and the roles of the lower branch of the vagus nerve, the sympathetic nervous system, and the neo-mammalian ventral branch of the vagus which facilitates social behavior amongst the phylogenetic groups that have evolved such systems. His theory is intertwined with RSA (respiratory sinus arrhythmia), a biomarker for vagal tone and one's ability to engage in social behaviors and cope with stress.

Though repetitive at times, Dr. Porges presents a unique theory behind the potential mechanisms underlying disorders such as autism and borderline personality disorder, and lays a foundation for future research and new therapeutic approaches.
