   A Valuable Resource:
   The editors Dr. Cathy Malchiodi and Dr. David Crenshaw have co-edited a book that incorporates chapter after chapter of invaluable information to assist creative arts and play therapists in our work with children and caregivers who are dealing with attachment issues. Throughout this book the reader is provided with information on interventions from a variety of creative arts and play therapy modalities and important insights into work with specific populations. An overview of key theoretic concepts, brain research, interventions and case vignettes is integrated throughout.    Edited volumes tend to be a mixed bag, with some worthwhile chapters, and others that are not particularly helpful. Malchiodi and Crenshaw's book is a rare exception, in that chapter after chapter is full of useful information for therapists working with a variety of child and adolescent clients with attachment issues. The strength of this volume is its interdisciplinary nature, drawing in contributors from play therapy, the creative arts therapies, neuroscience, and psychodynamic psychotherapy, to name a few. The chapters by Richard Gaskill and Bruce Perry, and by Eliana Gil are particularly useful, authoritative, and clear. Therapists working in the trenches with severely damaged young people will especially find much to inform their work within these pages.

   There are very few texts I purchase as a clinician that I read cover to cover. I will skip around and find what is most meaningful to my needs. There is no way I could skip around on this book. I read it in a weekend and have referred this book to several other colleagues. I gained so much insight into the way other approaches can support each other in the best interest of the child. Great addition to my library of resources.

   Art Therapist Cathy Malchiodi and Play Therapist David Crenshaw have co-edited a book that is the first volume in a new Guilford Press series, "Creative Arts and Play Therapy." The authors do a compelling job explaining that creative, experiential, sensory based therapies stimulate the right brain and help reestablish positive and secure attachment and should be considered the most effective approaches to use with children for whom it comes naturally. Attachment theory and recent brain research is interwoven with detailed clinical approaches including applications to specific populations. A variety of therapeutic approaches from expert clinicians are detailed out in case vignettes giving the reader the sense of being present in the therapy room and witnessing the healing process as it unfolds. Malchiodi and Crenshaw should be commended for their collaborative efforts that have resulted in a wonderful book that is sure to become a staple among both art and play therapists.

   Cathy Malchiodi and David Crenshaw, two giants in the fields of Art and Play Therapy respectively have co-edited a wonderful book that illustrates the healing power of these modalities for children with attachment disorders. By utilizing a total of 27 contributors our knowledge of this topic has been significantly enhanced. By weaving together theory, research, and case studies this work offers a comprehensive rationale of the value of not only play and art therapy in particular in providing a potent curative experience for children, but also examines the importance of music, dance and filial therapies among others. This work also provides cutting edge information on the neurobiological role of play. The writers do an exceedingly clear job of presenting the tenets of attachment and the application of such in real world therapeutic situations. The utilization of these approaches in working with at risk populations makes this not only a major academic work but one that has great clinical utility. Overall the editors and contributors are to be heartily commended for providing the therapeutic community with such a meaningful and well written book
