    Art For Children Experiencing Psychological Trauma is an excellent tool for any teacher or school-based professional who feels ill prepared when facing the needs of children who have experienced psychological trauma. I love the way the book is organized starting with a big-picture overview including a vast array of types of trauma then narrowing to specific examples of easily executed strategies. What constitutes a traumatic event and how do we identify the characteristics of those who have experienced them? Defining cause and effect of trauma on youth while offering research-based best practices to foster resiliency and academic growth are the pillars of organizational strength presented in this book. Even the cover visually communicates the hope and creativity that can color the darkened world of trauma.

    I was lucky enough to hear the authors speak at VSA this year. I immediately ordered this class for my classes for preservice and Masters students. This is an important topic! The women who wrote this have many years of diverse experiences teaching art to children and teens who have experienced trauma. Their strategies are practical and informed. They are nuanced. The authors are compassionate and committed to both the students (who have various challenges feeling engaged and safe in the classroom) and the quality of art experiences offered--this is a unique combination! The myriad forms of trauma that children experience are sadly so common; I highly recommend this for everyone who works with kids today!

    I have spent the last week reading this book as I prepare to teach my summer graduate art education courses. I initially bought a book for myself, a book for a faculty member who teaches our Impact on Behavioral Science course, and of course a copy for our library. I was going to review the book and pull selected sections for my students to read, but I ended up highlighting almost the whole book and so am asking our incoming students to purchase the book as well, and will require all students to purchase the book moving forward. What a gift these authors have given the art education community. With short and easy to read chapters that hold gold mines of information that include personal stories, real skill building strategies, and words of wisdom, to the succinct “Top 10’s” that they offer at the end of each section. I can only imagine how much time and energy went into such an incredibly thoughtful and easily digestible book. It has quickly made its way into our Art Education programs and our faculty, artists, art educators and pre-service teachers will be all the better for it.
