In this much-needed guide, a clinical psychologist and a social worker provide a flexible, ten-week protocol based in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to help adolescents overcome mental health hurdles and thrive.

If you’re a clinician working with adolescents, you understand the challenges this population faces. But sometimes it can be difficult to establish connection in therapy. To help, ACT for Adolescents offers the first effective professional protocol for facilitating ACT with adolescents in individual therapy, along with modifications for a group setting.

In this book, you’ll find invaluable strategies for connecting meaningfully with your client in session, while at the same time arriving quickly and safely to the clinical issues your client is facing. You’ll also find an overview of the core processes of ACT so you can introduce mindfulness into each session and help your client choose values-based action. Using the protocol outlined in this book, you’ll be able to help your client overcome a number of mental health challenges from depression and anxiety to eating disorders and trauma.

If you work with adolescent clients, the powerful and effective step-by-step exercises in this book are tailored especially for you. This is a must-have addition to your professional library.

I am still a new professional but graduated in 2019 with my MA in counseling. I have not worked as much providing therapy until my current position working with adolescents in detention. This book has given me new life in how I conceptualize my work and provide therapy and I absolutely love it. The book is straightforward, easy to read, explained the foundations of ACT and RFT, and I especially appreciated the section on rule governed behavior. There are many mindfulness exercises offered as well as metaphors that can be used throughout the therapeutic relationship depending on the focus of the session. I will be referencing this book often.

I usually don't write reviews for therapy books, and as a therapist I own thousands, but this book was one of the most excellent practical resources I have encountered. The authors include MANY practical ideas for use in session. ACT is effective for many different presentations, and among my thousands of therapy books, this is the one I will be accessing frequently for use with clients. Many books for therapists are short on interventions, but this book exceeded my expectations. I was so impressed I bought the author's workbook for teens, even though I own several. Wonderful resource.

I ultimately bought this book because one of the reviews shared that it would be beneficial for behavior analysts: I now see why. The authors do an excellent job of approaching ACT from a behavioral standpoint, so that it is much easier to digest for the cynical. It was worth the purchase for Part 1: ACT Basics, alone.

I love this book! I bought it to use with clients during my internship and it has been invaluable. It breaks everything down and explains it in terms that are easy to understand. The content is great. I use some of the exercises and metaphors when staffing cases with fellow classmates and they are always impressed with my treatment suggestions.

I found this book extremely helpful in guiding sessions both individually and in pairs for youth with emotional behavioral disorders. I recommend this for those in my field: behavior analysts (or interns) looking for supplemental guidance on working with youth.

Turrell and Bell present a clear, respectful, and fun way to bring Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to adolescents. The book is filled with practical exercises, and also transcripts that nicely illustrate how to have compassionate conversations with youth. Over a decade ago, when ACT was just taking off, I heard Albert Ellis say that ACT would only be understandable only to people with an IQ over 130. Since that time, there has been great progress in making ACT simpler. ACT for Adolescence is another step important step forward. If you do mindfulness-based or values work with young people, this book is a must read..
