The Zones of Regulation is a curriculum geared toward helping students gain skills in consciously regulating their actions, which in turn leads to increased control and problem solving abilities. Using a cognitive behavior approach, the curriculum’s learning activities are designed to help students recognize when they are in different states called “zones,” with each of four zones represented by a different color. In the activities, students also learn how to use strategies or tools to stay in a zone or move from one to another. Students explore calming techniques, cognitive strategies, and sensory supports so they will have a toolbox of methods to use to move between zones. To deepen students’ understanding of how to self-regulate, the lessons set out to teach students these skills: how to read others’ facial expressions and recognize a broader range of emotions, perspective about how others see and react to their behavior, insight into events that trigger their less regulated states, and when and how to use tools and problem solving skills. The curriculum’s learning activities are presented in 18 lessons. To reinforce the concepts being taught, each lesson includes probing questions to discuss and instructions for one or more learning activities. Many lessons offer extension activities and ways to adapt the activity for individual student needs. The curriculum also includes worksheets, other handouts, and visuals to display and share. These can be photocopied from this book or printed from the accompanying USB. The curriculum is designed to be taught by anyone who works with students who struggle with self-regulation. This can include special education and regular education teachers, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, psychologists, counselors, behaviorists, social workers, and parents. Throughout the text, the user is referred to as “teacher”; however, this does not mean you need to be a classroom teacher to teach the lessons.

While I am not an OT, I truly love being able to support children who come for outpatient therapy with this treatment. It is a very flexible manual where you can use specific parts or go through the whole manual to support children with autism. I usually use this treatment with children on the spectrum that are verbal and able to talk about concepts and reflect on ideas and examples given. It's a really great way to think about feelings and how they lead to actions that might affect others. A must have for clinicians working with school age children, wether that be in outpatient settings or in school.

In her book, The Zones of Regulation, the author, Leah M. Kuypers, explains why kids with self-regulation difficulties can benefit from targeted Sensory Integration strategies. The author provides a clear and accessible child-friendly color-coded system for adults and children to use when they collaborate for implementing the recommended strategies. In the book, Ms. Kuyper also includes many related helpful tools and resources. As a licensed pediatric occupational therapist with a specialty in Sensory Integration, I highly recommend this book!

I had to leave my response after seeing the low rating for this item. As a parent of a child who has struggled with self-regulation, this program has changed our lives. I didn't have to tools to help my son understand things that, to me, are second nature. Using this program, I was able to understand how to approach my son in a more supportive manner. He's also more confident and calm because he's learning to self-regulate his frustrations and voice his emotions.

Our counselor is the one who introduced us to this program. I can't recommend seeking the help of an experienced professional enough. But, for our family, this system changed our every day for the better. This is worth every single penny.

Great book to use to help your students get in touch with their feeling especially, in a special education classroom. Prior to the introduction of this book; I had my students watch the movie "Inside Out" which helped them to understand their feelings and emotions. Also, the book has a couple of extra lessons within lessons.

This is the best curriculum for self-regulation and coping skills that I know of! It combines the best parts of the five point scale and social behavior mapping (which are each referenced in their own chapters, where you could also insert parts of each of those strategies as needed) in its scope as well. The lessons can be modified to fit lower-functioning individuals fairly easily in my experience - just be ready to let each lesson take as many repetitions (and personalizations) and as much time as necessary and you are set!

Sadly this awareness is lacking and as adults many of us are struggling with emotional/mental health issues.
I hope our children benefit from parenting awareness of the importance of instilling emotional skills in childhood to develop as emotionally healthy adults.

This book makes it easy to teach and my son looks forward to our discussions every night!! As a parent I find it uses common sense approaches to teaching a person how to get in touch with their feelings, that the feelings are valid, then what to do with those feelings so that you don't loose control. The zones make sense and it teaches life skills. You can use it with elementary school age kids up to high school. An awesome aspect to this is that there is an APP that your child can play that goes along with the lessons. How great is this!! It solidifies everything. I have seen incredible growth in my son using the lessons in this book!!
