The difference that being female makes to the diagnosis, life and experiences of a person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has largely gone unresearched and unreported until recently. In this book Sarah Hendrickx has collected both academic research and personal stories about girls and women on the autism spectrum to present a picture of their feelings, thoughts and experiences at each stage of their lives.

Outlining how autism presents differently and can hide itself in females and what the likely impact will be for them throughout their lifespan, the book looks at how females with ASD experience diagnosis, childhood, education, adolescence, friendships, sexuality, employment, pregnancy and parenting, and aging. It will provide invaluable guidance for the professionals who support these girls and women and it will offer women with autism a guiding light in interpreting and understanding their own life experiences through the experiences of others.

As an autistic woman who also has a sister with an autism, we found the structure of this book amazing and easy to follow. It has both empirical evidence and studies as well as accounts from 30 different female aspies and their experiences as children and adults with the disorder, as well as their parent’s experiences with it. This book gave me a new sense of self love and power I didn’t know I had. It made sense of all my “quirks” and “deficiencies” and reminds me that as autistic people, we are not disabled, but “differently able” as others say. We just work differently than neurotypical people and that’s ok. We also have unique quirks and talents.

After many people suggested to me the possibilities of having adhd I decided to look into that fact, during my research I came across some information about autism so I delved further into that. Months passed and after discussing it in depth with my partner we came to the conclusion that I may be on the spectrum, and while searching for studies I found this book. After purchasing this book I was convinced that I had to be. I did see a doctor about it and sure enough !!

If you want to know more about women on the autism spectrum or think you, yourself may be on the spectrum I recommend reading this book and discussing the possibilities with your doctor!

I haven't finished the book I'm not going to lie (perhaps my adhd brain there, as I can never finish anything I start), so I'm not sure if it discusses anything about how to live on the spectrum or how to manage life better. But I hope one day I can manage to sit down and finish it!

This book is a very baseline book. If you have never read anything on female autism then this is a perfect book to start with! The author is autistic and she interviewed other autistic females for the book. It accounts for the most common experiences for autistic women from birth to death. It also talks about why women don't get diagnosed and it really goes into why it's so hard for female autists to get help. It's an excellent way to start the conversation about it but that is ALL it is—a starter.

I purchased four books from Amazon doing research on women with autism/Asperger‘s that were never diagnosed at a young age. This was the best book ever. I have highlights on almost every page.
There are small sentences or paragraphs included on how women who are on the autism spectrum feel about certain things in their life. I could relate to so much of it. Thank you so much for writing this book! I’ve always known I was different. Thirty years ago I thought I was “kind of” autistic. I stopped telling anybody that because they would laugh at me. “You can’t be kind of autistic” But I had several traits. I did not bang my head And I did not flap my hands but I’m still autistic nonetheless. It all just came together with this book. I am who I am and now I’m not going to listen to any more bullying because someone else’s false beliefs of who they think I am or should be. There’s nothing wrong with me. I just think & react differently than others.
    TEN ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ to Sarah Hendrickx!

I bought this book to help my child, it ended up helping me as well. After reading it, and having almost identical experiences to the women in this book, I decided to have an evaluation as well. Still waiting on the results, but this book opened my eyes. I am truly grateful for the women who’ve contributed to this book and the professionals who are putting their time and effort into research and education.

This is a great read for anyone who has been a recently diagnosed adult or for folks in the field of psychology. After reading this book so many things resonated with me and gave me comfort that I'm not the only one experiencing some of these 'quirky traits.'

What I enjoyed most about the book is the mix of personal and research-based accounts. Since there is not much research based data about women with AS it was great to read the real life experiences woman young and old have gone through. This book is an important starting point hopefully having more understanding and compassion for getting folks accomodations and support where needed.

Thank you, Dr. Sarah Hendrickx. I’m 51. I’ve spent my life as a puzzle wrapped up in a mystery. I was diagnosed last week with ASD. With every page that I turn in this book, I exhale. I finally understand why I behave the way I do. Self-deprecation — melting away. It’s strange and wonderful to have a manual for one’s brain. I’m ever grateful that Dr. Hendrickx vocalizes this story for adult women. I only wish there were more specialists and earlier diagnoses. This book is a giant step.

This book was an excellent read. It was easy to get through, written in a very approachable manner, and provided many perspectives to help make sense of how different people might think about similar situations. I found it incredibly insightful. I also have found Sarah Hendrickx videos on YouTube that very much add to and expand on this content. If you are a woman or afab or your socialization was feminine gendered and you've been diagnosed as an adult, this book may be helpful for you to understand yourself a little better. If you are a friend or family member looking to support and adult or wonder what adulting on the spectrum may mean for a younger girl in your life, this may provide a look into what's going on in her head and help you step into her world a bit.

Unsure of which female autism book to start with? This is the one. This lays the groundwork, and sets the bar.

Required reading for any female human who thinks they may be autistic, anyone who knows a female with autism, or who has recently been diagnosed with autism. This book exhibits peer reviewed science frankly (and often humorously) mixed with personal anecdotes, and this gives the book a warmth and clarity that's hard to find in other books on the subject.

Furthermore, it addresses the entire lifetime of a woman on the autism spectrum, putting forth an ambitious array of autism expression, and various individual testimonies.

I cannot recommend this book enough.

This is one of the most helpful books I've ever read on Asperger's Syndrome - now officially referred to as ASD or Autism Spectrum Disorder. I could just hug the author! It is a European publication so it does use all the European English spellings which I find slightly off-putting but then I am an Aspie, so how could it be otherwise!? The book explains so many things about how Aspie girls, women and female senior citizens think and act - it has finally given me the final answer to my years' long research into this syndrome 100% confirming my sensed diagnosis of this. It has also taken the SHAME out of being SO DIFFERENT from other women which is so freeing, leading to self-acceptance. I highly recommend this book to any female or parent/spouse/child of a female who suspects they have this potentially disabling condition.

I purchased this book earlier today when I found it while looking for books with a focus on women and girls on the Autism Spectrum. I've been reading it this afternoon and I'm happy that it's what I hoped it would be. Since being diagnosed in late 2014 I've been looking for and reading any book that I could find with a focus on women and girls. There are not that many, most, until recently, focusing on children and adolescents on the Spectrum, often with a focus on males. Books written from our perspective as girls, adolescents and women on the Spectrum are much newer on the scene and very welcome. I look forward to finishing this book and I'm grateful that it, and others like it are being written. I've pre ordered Life on the Autism Spectrum - A Guide for Girls and and Women, which will be out in September.
